Around 5:30 pm on Friday, Dec. 9, according to reports from New England Fire News, Franklin firefighters began responding to a fire report at 265 Union Street. They reported encountering moderate smoke conditions in the 3-story multifamily wood-frame structure.
At about 6:30, according to the same source, a second alarm was sounded as it appeared the fire had spread from the second to the third floor and possibly to an attic area.
Shortly thereafter there were more than a dozen fire and police vehicles on the scene from Franklin, Norfolk, and Medway.
By 6:48, the fire was reportedly substantially knocked down with crews chasing elusive hotspots.
Around 7:13, the State Fire Marshall was requested, and the Red Cross was summoned to help the five families displaced
At 7:26 the fire was reported to be under control, though some units remained on scene.
