A quiet Franklin cul-de-sac was transformed yesterday into a scene of industrial mayhem as a large crane, brought on site, according to homeowner Joan McCarthy, to help remove a tree, suddenly toppled, with its boom slamming into the ridge of the home’s roof and becoming bent out of shape in the process. The scene at 1 Michelle’s Way, which began to unfold just before 2 pm, quickly attracted more heavy equipment, needed to try to right the first crane, and also broadcast news media including local NBC affiliate and Boston 25. A WCVB helicopter also made an appearance overhead.
According to reports, Franklin Fire Department first heard about the mishap around 1:50 and later dispatched units to monitor the situation. Boston 25 reported that the crane tipped because an outrigger collapsed into the location
The homeowner heard the sound of the crane striking the home and was able to evacuate occupants without injury.
Building inspector Lloyd “Gus” Brown was also on scene into the evening trying to determine at what point if any it might be possible to allow residents to return to the home.
Righting and removal of the crane presented particular challenges because the bent boom would make the crane inherently unstable. Furthermore, even if the crane could be righted, retracting the boom for transport would appear to be impossible, suggesting that it will have to be partially disassembled in place.
