Tuesday morning was humming on the second floor of the Senior Center, with something like 30 people joining in the festivities and readings associated with the release of the third volume of writings from the group, the Senior Scribblers.

And as fellow Scribbler, Pete Fasciano noted, “it is a real book,” nicely printed with some 77 pages encompassing all kinds of writing.

Following introductory remarks by Ariel Doggett and Steve Sherlock, the first writers to showcase their writing through a reading were Faith Flaherty and William Wyllie. Their matching stories were the result of a kind of ‘slam’ or throwdown that grew out of a walking group trip to Beaver Pond during which the pair encountered a large snake.

Flaherty took the inspiration first and described the mini adventure in verse, in the closing stanza, challenging Wyllie to match her, which he did. The result, with their closely paired stories but very different perspective offers maybe a hint of the the Japanese film Rashomon, but with lots of fun and good humor throughout.

There are plenty of other wonderful surprises from the writers’ group ranging from poetry to thoughts about the state of the world and the passage of time.

Senior Scribblers' Writers Group meets weekly on Wednesdays via Zoom. To join, email Steve Sherlock at shersteve@gmail.com
