We hear from the firearms school in Hopkinton, at which a number of Franklinites teach, that Massachusetts legislators are rumored to vote on a new gun control law tomorrow [E.g. Wednesday} that will impose severe consequences on gun owners.
This bill appears to include an emergency preamble, meaning that once it is passed, it goes into effect immediately.
HD 4607 marks the second attempt by Massachusetts politicians to curtail the rights of Massachusetts residents, potentially putting many law-abiding citizens in legal jeopardy. Their previous attempt (HD 4420) was thwarted due to a scheduling conflict in the legislative calendar. Now, with an open calendar ahead, and an eagerness to push this law through, Massachusetts gun owners have little time to act.
Here is a summary of some key provisions in this law…
Essentially, it will prohibit the possession of all semi-automatic rifles. While existing owners will be permitted to retain their rifles if acquired before the law is enacted, no further transactions involving these "grandfathered" rifles will be allowed.
There will also be significant restrictions on the concealed carry of firearms in the state.
Additionally, the law incorporates numerous instances of vague language, potentially putting gun owners at risk of non-compliance, regardless of their willingness to adhere to the law.
