Paul Vogel was born in Boston, MA in 1939 and spent a number of years being cared for at St. Theresa’s Home of the Little Flower, in Franklin, MA. Paul joined the Air Force in January 1956. He completed basic training at Lackland, AFB then went to Chanute, AFB for Weather Observer Training. He was stationed at Osan, AFB Korea for 3 years. At the 25th Weather Squadron he received forecaster training in all aspects of Air Force meteorology from pilot briefing to weather forecasting. He flew on B-14’s and B-29’s retrofitted for weather observations, flying into cyclones to take pressure and wind speed measurements. He returned to the states in January of 1959 to Andrews, AFB where he was detailed to several locations in Alaska, including Shemya. He received an honorable discharge in January of 1960 from the Air Force.

He joined the weather service in Anchorage, Alaska and became the cook for the Spenard Fire Department. This is where he met Dolores, his wife. They got married in Illinois and Paul joined the Department of Transportation as an Air Traffic Controller. They had two children, identical twin daughters, Margaret and Michelle.

He retired after 33 years of working as an Air Traffic Controller, to a home in Monticello, Illinois where he and Dolores lived for 15 years. They enjoyed being “snowbirds” in Destin for 10 of those years and were a part of “The Beach Street Gang”. Paul and Dolores permanently moved to Niceville in 2014 and enjoyed the mild winter climate where Paul would fondly refer to himself as “Santa Claus on vacation”. He spent many enjoyable hours talking with neighbors and acquaintances, reading books from the Niceville library, and taking classes at the Niceville Senior Center. He died in his home on 14 July 2024.

Paul is preceded in death by his wife of almost 61 years, Dolores, his brother Louis Vogel III and sister Jeanette Griffin. He is survived by his twin daughters Michelle White and Maggie Vogel-Martin, sister Pat Parker and numerous nieces and nephews.

We will be having a Gathering of Friends from 1-3 pm on Friday 26 July 2024.
