Dam That Straddles Franklin-Medway Line A Hot Topic

In Medway, the town is gearing up for the `Sanford Mill Pond Dam Alternatives Analysis Meeting' which will look at options including removing the dam, a step favored by the politically powerfully and well-funded Charles River Watershed Association, or a variety of less drastic steps.

With the elimination of the Caryville Dam on the Charles River in Bellingham several years ago, the mill and the surrounding village structures there  were permanently altered or eliminated and a vibrant ecosystem at Roaring Brook Pond was completely destroyed, replaced by narrow, ditch for the Charles River. The process also eliminated a waterfront or at least a water view that many home owners had long taken for granted.

In 2022, CRWA began laying the ground work to do the same thing to the Sanford Mill Dam, which sits at the northern end of Lincoln Street in Franklin.

The Medway Project Team invites members of the public to an introductory meeting on the Sanford Mill Pond Dam Alternative Analysis Project. The meeting will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, at 7:00 pm. This meeting will be held in person at the Medway Middle School, Presentation Room (Door 7), 45 Holliston Street.

The Town's engineering consultant, GZA GeoEvironmental (GZA), will present an overview of the current conditions of the dam, outline the planned tasks and data collection efforts, and provide technical assistance during the question-and-answer session.

Please visit Sanford Dam Website for more project information or email the town at dpw@townofmedway.org.
