Credit card larceny, encompassing both the theft of credit cards/details and their fraudulent use, represents a significant problem both nationally and in Massachusetts, according to authorities.

National perspective
Widespread Impact: Credit card fraud is widespread, affecting millions of Americans annually. In 2024, nearly 450,000 reports of credit card fraud were filed, making it the most prevalent type of identity theft. It's estimated that 63% of US credit card holders have been victims of fraud at some point.
Significant Losses: In 2024 alone, unauthorized credit card purchases reached $6.2 billion annually, according to Security.org.
Primary Type of Identity Theft: Credit card fraud has consistently ranked as the most common form of identity theft for several years.
Card-Not-Present Fraud Dominates: Most credit card fraud (92%) doesn't involve the physical theft of a card, but rather the fraudulent use of account information accessed remotely. This highlights the increasing prevalence of online and digital forms of credit card crime.
Rising Trend: The number of reported credit card fraud cases has been on a steady rise in recent years, with a 24% increase in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the last quarter of 2024, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
Impact on Victims: While federal laws limit liability for fraudulent credit card use, victims often face the time-consuming and frustrating process of restoring their credit and dealing with the consequences of identity theft.
