Ashland Students NOT Attacked by Bees on First Day of School

Contrary to the universally incorrect reporting by area print and broadcast media, the students in Ashland were attacked not by bees but by yellow jackets. Yellow jackets and bees are not the same. While both are flying insects with black and yellow markings, they belong to different insect families and have distinct characteristics. Yellow jackets are a type of wasp, specifically belonging to the Vespidae family, while bees are from the Apidae family and are not generally aggressive. Furthermore, bees are a critical pollinator that has suffered significant population declines, so don’t let bad reporting encourage you to kill bees you may find on your property.
