What Should Medway Look Like?

Image

Above, a century-old postcard image of the Village Inn in Medway.

The way Medway looks, didn't just happen. Many historical and economic forces had their say, as did popular opinion and regulation. Consider that, according to the "Tercentennial Handbook of Medway History, " in 1915, "Nearly all the houses in town are being repainted in white with green blinds. Home owners are urged to clean up backyards and improve sanitary conditions," all no doubt thanks to local social pressure and a shared ideal of what a New England town should look like.

In a modern echo of that process, the town is convening a Design Review event.

Residents
are being invited for an ‘engaging presentation” on Medway’s
development history, highlighting the architectural styles and eras
reflected in the town’s commercial, industrial, and residential
buildings. The presentation will be followed by a “collaborative
visioning” session “where you can share your thoughts on which
design approaches are working well and where there may be room for
improvement.”

The session will be on Sept 30 from 7-9 pm at the
Thayer Homestead at 28 Oak Street.
