Medway High School students recently presented Applied Learning group projects to over 500 industry professionals at the One8 Applied Learning Hub Student Showcase in Boston.

On May 8, 11 Medway students joined hundreds of others from throughout the Commonwealth in presenting at the showcase, and two Medway projects won awards.

Students presented their work at "the TRACK at new balance" during the One8 Applied Learning Hub Student Showcase, an annual event for Applied Learning programs across Massachusetts. Groups presented their work and received written and verbal feedback from industry professionals.

“The One8 Applied Learning Hub Student Showcase offers students an opportunity to see firsthand how their work can positively impact the world,” said Superintendent Armand Pires. “Speaking with industry experts allowed them to make connections between their curriculum and real-world careers they may pursue. I’m proud of our students for putting themselves out there and was thrilled to see them leave the showcase with awards and constructive feedback.”

Seniors Bridget Tonelli, Macy Healy, and Isabella Webb won the Project Lead the Way Capstone Program Award for their project, “ToneIn App.” The app is designed to help people who struggle to communicate verbally by providing a platform to communicate spoken messages without losing the nuances of personal conversations.

As the students designed the app, they considered the needs of deaf or mute individuals, people with disorders that affect speech and people with speech impediments.

“I’m extremely proud of all the students who presented at the showcase,” said Jon Jasinski, a capstone, physics and engineering teacher. “They have spent months designing, revising and finalizing their projects, and it was wonderful to see their presentations go so smoothly. They spoke to the industry professionals with confidence and poise, and I was proud to have them representing Medway High School at the showcase.”

Freshmen Jaswanth Bandaru and Tanish Asu won the Project of Distinction Award for their engineering project, “Mission: Controller.” They designed and created a mounted controller holder for the VEX V5 controllers that are frequently left unorganized in Medway's robotics lab. Their final prototype fulfilled the group’s initial criteria as a controller holder that allowed for convenient charging, was effective in protecting the controller from damage, was mountable and reduced material usage.

“Our students have worked on these projects for months, and we were thrilled to see their efforts pay off at the showcase,” said Principal John Murray. “We wish to recognize all of the groups who presented, and we’d like to congratulate the students who worked on ‘ToneIn App’ and ‘Mission: Controller.’ Both of these projects addressed issues relevant to the Medway community and beyond, and we are proud to see our students creating effective solutions to real-world problems.”
