Tuesday, the Boston Globe editorial board endorsed Elizabeth Dionne for Massachusetts State Treasurer, writing that “after 12 years, it’s time for a new set of eyes” and that voters should give the common-sense moderate a chance to improve the functioning of state government.
“We’re honored the Globe has placed its trust in our campaign,” Dionne said. “This endorsement confirms that the issues we’ve raised throughout the race are legitimate and deserve attention.”
The Globe specifically cited concerns over Treasurer Deb Goldberg’s handling of the Cannabis Control Commission, including her decision to fire Shannon O’Brien, an episode that raised serious questions about whistleblower protections, cost taxpayers more than $1 million, and ended with a court ordering O’Brien’s reinstatement after finding no evidence of gross misconduct.
The editorial also highlighted Dionne’s pledge to conduct an independent audit of the Treasury, seek spending efficiencies, and bring a fresh approach to returning unclaimed property to its rightful owners. Dionne has called for statutory changes to help return more than $450 million in unclaimed property that currently sits unclaimed.
The state does not pay interest on funds it holds and has had little incentive to speed the process. However, facing a competitive race, Goldberg only this week announced a new plan to reach out to "rightful owners."
The Globe’s decision to endorse a Republican for statewide office underscores that it focused on the candidate and the substance of the issues rather than party affiliation. As the editorial noted, Dionne would bring a commitment to fiscal responsibility and a willingness to review entrenched practices across the Treasurer’s broad portfolio.
Voters will decide the race on November 3.
