DIY FRI: My Old House Doesn't Have Wall Sockets with a Ground...

Image

My old house has wall plugs without a ground plug, what can I do? According to Jack Daddario, Jr., owner of Daddario Hardware on West Central Street, it would be dangerous and contrary to the electrical code to install a “three prong” receptacle into an old circuit that lacks proper grounding. The ideal solution is to have a pro rewire the circuit with modern, grounded conduit. However, adapters exist for small appliances and some include a green wire or tab that can be screwed to the electrical box. If the underlying box that doesn’t’ have a ground wire was installed using armored cable, that steel sheathing, which connects to the box and from there to an external screw, provides a very small amount of ground protection, but again, this is no longer a recommended approach, according to Jack.
