A group of adults and children bearing flags and signs with patriotic-themed messages waved to passing cars as Columbus Day weekend began on Friday between 5 and 6 pm. Stationed on the sidewalk near the Liquor World shopping plaza on West Central Street, the group said they aimed to be non-political -- no electoral  signs were in evidence.

One woman, who asked to not be quoted by name, said the goal was “to honor our freedom and appreciate the work of the founding fathers.”

“If we look around today, we have lost sight of that truth. It’s time we go back to basics and honor the world they gave us.,” she said.
