Rev. Dr. Carl Schultz, “Dr. Carl”, 91 of Franklin, MA died peacefully on August 18 at the Milford Regional Medical Center. He was born in New Castle Pennsylvania, on September 15, 1930, to Carl and Elizabeth (McChesney) Schultz. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Annalee (Price) Schultz. He is survived by his children, Barbara Rhodes, and her husband Wayne of Jamaica Plain, Esther Brenner and her husband Scott of Rutland and the Rev. Carl Schultz and his wife Jean of Uxbridge, and his four grandchildren, Emma, Carl Jr., Annika, and Joshua.

He was also predeceased by his two sisters, Goldie Schultz, and Catherine Jones and is also survived by two half-brothers, Norman and Ned Phillips and one half-sister, Martha Huffman.

Dr. Carl graduated from New Castle High School, Houghton College (BA), Malone College (B.R.E), Wheaton College (MA), and Brandeis University (PhD).

He was in pastoral ministry for over 65 years, serving at the Cheektowaga Wesleyan Church (1954-1958), the Bradford Wesleyan Methodist Church (1958-1965), the Java First Congregational Church (1966-1967), the Medway Community Church (1967-1971), the Hinsdale United Methodist and Ischua Union churches (1971-2010), and most recently the Marlborough United Methodist Church (2012-2021).

Dr. Carl was a professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Houghton College in Houghton, NY for over 46 years, serving as Chairman of the division of Religion and Philosophy for 21 years and twice receiving the Faculty of the Year award. In addition, he served as Academic Dean of Houghton’s Buffalo campus and as a visiting professor at Kingsley College in Melbourne, Australia and at United Theological Seminary.

He received five research grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, studying at Yale, Cornell, Boston University and Bethel. He was awarded the Teaching Excellence award from the Independent College Fund of New York and was nominated for the Carnegie Foundation U.S. Professor of the Year in 1997.

Dr. Carl served as a contributor on the Wesley Study Bible (NKJV), the Evangelical Commentary on the Bible and the Asbury Bible Commentary and led over 22 trips to the Holy Land, last traveling there in 2020.

He was a member of the Fillmore Rotary Club for many years, serving multiple terms as president and named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1988.

A man who loved his family, he had a servant’s heart and was always looking for ways to care for people. He lived his life according to Romans 12:12, Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 3 in the Medway Community Church, 196 Main Street in Medway at 10:00 a.m. Calling hours will be on Friday from 5-7 p.m. in the Ginley-Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St. in Medway (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com).

In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Dementia Society of America.
