Rescuing the American Revolution's Big Birthday

A big historic anniversary is coming up in 2025. "The American Revolution has a huge birthday coming up -- it's 250th," noted State Senator Mike Barrett (D-Lexington), whose district includes Lexington, Concord and Lincoln. He noted that Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and others of the original 13 colonies began their own preparations years ago, but, in Massachusetts, state support did not materialize.

However, he added in a prepared statement, "In a 'supplemental budget' just filed for the current budget year, the Governor proposes $2 million in funding to jumpstart state-level preparations. We’re getting serious about using our highest-profile moment in decades to present Massachusetts to the nation and the world in its best light -- its past, for sure, but also its present and future," said Barrett.

"I first broached the subject to the Lt. Governor in December and to the Governor in February, and over the space of several weeks they conceived and launched this rescue. I really appreciate their willingness to listen. Right away, they understood what’s at stake. This thing was stymied but now, thanks to them, it’s moving. We’re behind in the game but our first team, our starters, are taking the court," Barrett said.

Franklin State Rep. Jeff Roy confirmed that the measure intended to support the current barebones commemoration effort, known informally as Rev 250,  is indeed "for the Commission work we are doing; we discussed it at our last meeting and initiated a request for the Governor to move on it."

Roy share the proposed language:
Massachusetts Marketing Partnership

7008-0250 For the office of travel and tourism for the costs of planning and celebrating the Commonwealth’s 250th anniversary of the American Revolution ……................... $2,000,000

Roy said the bill goes to the House for initial action and  "I would expect that we will take it up in the next few weeks. We are hopeful that Massachusetts will take a lead role in this great celebration for the nation."  Roy said the first historic celebration of the Revolution period was the  Sacred Cod procession in January.
