All That Jazz

The hot spot in town Thursday night was Magnolia Heights Gracious Retirement Living. The Ko Trio, which often play at 3 Restaurant, was the headliner for an evening of jazz-flavored music free to residents and the public. The KO Trio is Kymberlee O’Brien, a jazz vocalist and percussionist who hails originally from California, where she performed in world-class jazz clubs along the Pacific Coast Highway, including La Jolla, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco; Jim McCue is a versatile guitarist and bass player; and a sideman who plays in various bands/duos in the area; and, Paul Hoogeveen is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed in nightclubs and at special events throughout New England since the 1980s. He recently returned to playing double bass.

On Wednesday, March 6, at about 10:20 a.m., Norfolk Police and Fire received reports of smoke alarms sounding at the Norfolk Housing Authority, 33 Rockwood Road. Upon arrival, Norfolk Police officers observed light smoke in a hallway of the building. Fire crews arrived on scene and quickly stretched a hose line into a unit on the second floor to extinguish the fire. The fire, which was contained to one unit, was declared under control and crews began overhaul operations within 10 minutes of arriving. Residents had safely evacuated the building before the arrival of first responders. No injuries were reported. One resident was displaced and is being assisted by family and friends. Franklin Housing Authority manages the property under a contractual arrangement.

Assisted Living Concerns

Fearing a disruption in health care delivery by the end of the month, assisted living supporters pressed lawmakers last week to extend a pandemic-era order that would allow nurses to continue providing basic services to residents, including injections, oxygen management and simple wound care. The current extension permitting basic care for assisted living residents, as well as staffing and training flexibilities, is slated to lapse on March 31, leaders from the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association said during an advocacy day event. "If the order expires March 31, then those residents would need to find other ways to receive those services," Brian Doherty, CEO of Mass-ALA, said. "The services have been allowed since April of 2020, when it was originally a governor's emergency order. And there was a UMass Boston study that found that residents benefitted from these services because they received the insulin injections and other services in a more timely manner that improved health outcomes."

Commuter Rail Delayed

On March 9, a downed Amtrak wire forced over 80 passengers to evacuate on the commuter rail around 3 pm. Franklin Line train 1708 was held near Ruggles station once fire crews arrived and the passengers onboard were evacuated. Shuttle buses replaced regular service for a time, with regular train service resuming around 8:00 p.m., according to the MBTA.
