For the First Time Since the 1890s, NO Franklin School Will Bear the Mann Name

Horace Mann (1796-1859) is an internationally known figure in the field of public education, and the Franklin-born reformer, who rose from poverty to eminence, is memorialized in the names of at least 50 public schools across the US, and countless other institutions, including a giant insurance company. But as a product of school consolidation, the Franklin Public Schools are removing the Horace Mann name from an existing middle school in an apparent effort to spread the pain of change equally across existing school communities. What's the old saw, "a prophet is not without honor except in his own country"?

Sparhawk Academy Adding High School

This Fall, the Sparhawk Academy Board of Trustees voted unanimously
to expand our current grades 3–8 school by adding a grade 9
offering beginning in Fall 2025. Sparhawk will add grades 10–12
over the following three years. "Since we opened our doors in 2018,
there has been a growing demand within the Sparhawk community for a
high-quality high school experience. However, we have always
emphasized the importance of first establishing an excellent grades
3–8 program. Now we are confident that the time has come." Information on the school can be found here.

In Case You Missed It: MORE Winter

Ms. G, the official groundhog of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, saw her shadow while venturing outside at Mass Audubon’s Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary in Lincoln, which means six more weeks of winter. If she had not seen her shadow, it would’ve meant an early spring.

This is the first time in five years that Ms. G saw her shadow, eliciting groans from more than 100 people who braved single-digit temperatures to celebrate at Drumlin Farm. Now in her eighteenth year of prognosticating, Ms. G has evenly split her predictions—nine times calling for an early spring and nine extended winters. She also agreed with her slightly more famous Pennsylvanian woodchuck colleague, Punxsutawney Phil, for the second year in a row.

Although Ms. G is far more accurate compared to Punxsutawney Phil with 60 percent of her predictions being on target as opposed to Phil’s 30 percent, she still wants to wish her friend congratulations on recently becoming a father.
