Scott Ferson, a Massachusetts public relations executive and Democratic political strategist, has spent much of his career working in government, political campaigns and public affairs. This year, he became a published author and on Sunday will be delving into its content in a free, non-partisan program.

According to Ferson, his book, `How the Democrats Lost America: Making Sense of the 2024 Election and the Future of American Politics,’ is about the current disconnect in our country with national politics, and specifically the Democratic Party's disconnect, but it is set in a historical context. It ends with an appeal for us to re-examine the promise in the Declaration that we have the power to continually shape our democracy and our Constitutional republic.  According to Ferson, `How the Democrats Lost America’ explains not only why Kamala Harris and the Democrats lost the 2024 election but the larger disconnect the party has with voters in general, particularly those who don’t hug both coasts or live in select big cities in between. Through thousands of interviews over the past eight years, Ferson exposes a larger problem facing our democracy: A profound disconnect with the people.

Ferson himself was born in Medford and raised in Burlington. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Southeastern Massachusetts University, now the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. After graduating, he joined the staff of newly elected U.S. Rep. Chester G. Atkins, working on economic development issues affecting Lawrence and Lowell. Ferson later earned a master’s degree in strategic public relations from George Washington University.

In 1987, Ferson left Atkins’ office to work on U.S. Rep. Richard Gephardt’s presidential campaign. He later joined the staff of U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, serving in Kennedy’s Boston office as press secretary and Massachusetts issues director from 1990 to 1995. His tenure included Kennedy’s closely watched 1994 reelection campaign against Republican Mitt Romney.

Ferson subsequently moved into the private sector, working on a range of public affairs issues. His work included the successful effort by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to build a temple in Belmont and the launch of the Fishing Partnership Health Plan.

In 1999, Ferson founded Liberty Square Group, a strategic communications and public affairs firm serving corporate, nonprofit and political clients. Its work includes government affairs, public relations, media relations and government marketing at the local, state and federal levels. The firm’s political division, Blue Lab, works with political candidates and organizations.

Ferson has also remained active in Massachusetts politics. He served as communications director for U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch and as a senior adviser during Seth Moulton’s successful 2014 congressional campaign.
