Learn How to Grow Orchids Successfully

Franklin, MA - Orchids 101, a program on growing and caring for orchids, will be the featured presentation at the Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Franklin Garden Club meeting. Orchid experts Linda Abrams and Mike Badia will discuss a variety of topics related to orchids. The meeting will take place at the Franklin Senior Center, 10 Daniel McCahill Street, from 6:00– 8:30 p.m. An informal social get-together will take place from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. followed by a business meeting and the program. The meeting is open to the public at no charge. The club encourages those interested in becoming a member or learning about orchids to attend.

“Orchids 101” will include tips on the basics of orchid culture, including good types of orchids for growing in the home, watering, fertilizing, light requirements, potting mixes, repotting and pests. There will also be an orchid repotting demo. Additionally, the speakers will highlight some of their favorite sources for orchid plants, orchid information on the web, and the Massachusetts Orchid Society (MOS)

Abrams has grown orchids since 1984 and has approximately 175 plants. Active in the MOS, she has served as a board member, organized exhibits, and offered numerous presentations on orchids.

Badia became involved with orchids in 1982. He now grows orchids in a basement grow room under LED lights, on a 48 inch three tier LED light cart and on windowsills with most of his plants summering outside. He grows a variety of orchids in his 400- plant collection and is an active member of the MOS, assisting with the annual auction and show table. He currently serves as vice president of the MOS.
