At midday, Franklin Fire was called to a fire scene at 43 Southgate Road where a car had caught fire and was starting to involve the house as well.
About a dozen pieces of equipment were eventually on the scene, including police department vehicles. Crews and equipment from Bellingham and Medway were also at the site.
One witness used the word “explosion” to describe the fire but no one else corroborated that term. However, the vehicle fire was intense enough that not much was left other than metal components. The siding on the home was melted and firefighters continued to probe for some time to make sure fire had not penetrated the structure.
Residents all evacuated safely and there were no injuries according to Chief James McLaughlin at the scene.
Several minutes into the fire response a unit was called away to nearby Oak Street Extension for a resident reporting an unknown odor at the home.
