A growing town has outgrown its police station – and talk amongst people involved with town government indicates that both the former Davis Thayer School and the still-operating Parmenter School are on the short list.
While there are no plans to close Parmenter yet, a facilities subcommittee of the full School Committee has been looking at ways to ensure more consistent academic outcomes across the town and Parmenter, which has a substantial portion of students from lower-income families, seems likely to run afoul of this new focus.
Also, not clear is whether the original donation of land by the Parmenter family, to memorialize a son killed in World War II, would apply to a new municipal use.
And, of course, there are other potential sites in town. But both Davis Thayer and Parmenter have ready access to main roads and a large enough piece of land to give planners flexibility.
