Tri-County Chamber Adds Brooke Scholarship for Black History Month

Last month, the Tri-County Regional Chamber of Commerce added a new feature to its education initiatives in support of Black History Month.

For the past 35 years, the Tri-County Regional Chamber of Commerce and businesses across the communities it serves have honored the academic success of the top 10 percent of high school seniors from public high schools in the Chamber’s region at the Honors Scholar Night. This year, the Chamber is adding a new element to the Honor Scholars event, the Edward W. Brooke Scholarship, worth $1000. This is in honor of Ed Brooke, the first African-American to be elected as US senator and MA Attorney General

In 1966, Brooke, a Republican, was elected to the US Senate from Massachusetts - the first African-American ever popularly elected to that body. He also had an impressive career of overcoming adversity as an Army officer in World War II and as the Massachusetts Attorney General - again making history as the first Black elected to that role ever, in the United States.

Students interested in applying should submit brief personal details as well as a short essay of less than 1000 words, explaining what we, in 2023, can learn from Brooke or should choose to emulate. The prompt and requirements for the essay will be sent to area high schools by March 15.

The award this year is $1000 for first place. If sufficient funds are raised, 2nd, 3rd place scholarships may also be awarded.

High Schools included in this scholarship event are Bellingham, Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, Franklin, Holliston, Hopedale, Hopkinton, Medway, Milford, Millis, Nipmuc Regional and Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical. Following the “new tradition” established during the Covid Pandemic, rather than holding the 600-person event in person, the Chamber will honor our students online, and hand deliver a celebratory package instead. Scholarship recipient(s) will be contacted directly by the Chamber.
