Bernard M. “Chips” DeMelle, Jr., 79, of Franklin, passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, Wednesday March 8, 2023 at Milford Regional Medical Center, following a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Nancy J. (Davidson) DeMelle, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.

Born August 6, 1943, in Waltham, a son of the late Bernard M. DeMelle, Sr. and Evelyn M. (Veno) DeMelle, he was a resident of Franklin for over 40 years.

He was raised and educated in Waltham and was a graduate of Waltham High School. Bernard worked for Stop & Shop Supermarket until his retirement; he worked in many stores including Franklin where he served as the produce manager.

“Chips” life was his family; he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed reading, following all the Boston sports teams and driving through all the New England States with his wife. One of his greatest joys was coaching his daughter’s softball teams and later watching his grandchildren’s sporting events. He would also be found waiting a good rainstorm with the hope of a little lighting.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Robin J. Benkoski & Holly M. DeMelle both of Franklin and a sister Donna M. Asaro of Framingham.

Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren, Nicolas S. DeMelle, Jay Benkoski, Jordyn A. Benkoski and Lexi M. Benkoski.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his calling hours Tuesday March 14th, in the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. from 5-7PM.

Words of Remembrance will follow at 7PM.

His interment will be held privately.

If desired, donations in his memory may be sent to the American Heart Association 300 5th Ave. Waltham, MA 02451.
