Earth Day at DelCarte has been rescheduled to Sunday, May 7 from 9 am to 1 pm. The DelCarte Conservation Area is located at 459 Pleasant Street and overflow parking is available at 337 Pleasant Street and on nearby side streets.
The event is for both children and families and includes participation by the Conservation Commission, Department of Public Works, Department of Conservation and Recreation, Agricultural Commission, Audubon Society, Energize Franklin, Metacomet Land Trust, Nature’s Nurse and others.
Service hours can be validated for trash cleanup and seeding.
The event includes a Woods Walk at 11:30 as well as Build Your Own Native Bee House, make and take native “seed bombs,” signup for compost bins and rain barrels, and generally learn about wildlife ecology, conservation, and more.
The week following the originally planned Earth Day, members of Franklin Future Leaders continued project work they have been pursuing with Conservation Agent Breeka Li Goodlander, in this case helping to plant seeds and small shrubs.
According to Goodlander, the vegetation planted included little bluestem, big bluestem, switchgrass and highbush blueberry. Other native plantings are scheduled to occur later this season. More information on the project can be found here, including a comprehensive list of all proposed vegetation species within the Request for Determination of Applicability (RDA).
According to Franklin Future Leaders, the participants included Kylie and Kendall Desmarais, Bella and Jack Wood, and Martina and Flavia Freitas. Cheryl and David Hobbs were the Leader and Co-Leader.
"We are going back on May 18 to finish the plantings," Cheryl Hobbs added.
