Just say 'No' --Group Offers an Override 411 on 4-11

A group aiming to alert the public about the imminent possibility of an override vote to increase taxes, is planning a kickoff meeting Thursday evening at the Rome restaurant, at 6:00 pm, and the public is invited to join and have a bite to eat or a drink.

Set up with the assistance of the Franklin Republican Town Committee, the organizers said their first goal is informational -- to provide voters a clearer view of school spending and town resources, and the cons of jacking up tax rates. Additionally, they hope to organize those concerned about the level of taxation and interested in finding other ways forward. And, they aim to let legislators "know they are there."

A pro-override group that calls itself One Franklin has been active since early in 2023 and has held multiple events, some in conjunction with supportive legislators.

But when push comes to shove, in the past, Franklin voters have generally declined the invitation to raise taxes.  The pro-override folks are hopeful the measure can be gotten before the ballot in a special election as early as June, when parents of school age children are in town, likely to vote, and perhaps able to tip the matter toward approval.

Others hope that if the measure does go before the public, it can be in the fall.

For those going to the Rome, the restaurant has an overflow parking lot behind the main lot and there is also a municipal parking lot a short distance way on West Central Street.
