Dorothy L. Smith, 106

Dorothy L. Smith, 106, of Danvers, formerly of Franklin, died Monday, May 13, 2024 at Putnam Farm. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, G. Bushnell Smith, M.D.
Born in Fitchburg, the daughter of the late Harold R. Green, M.D. and Inez Moffatt Green and raised in Franklin. She was a graduate of Franklin High School Class of 1935 and continued her education at Wheaton College earning a Bachelor's degree in psychology. After working in merchandising at Cherry & Webb and Filene's downtown she joined the Red Cross as a case aide.
Her professional career began at Boston University School of Social Work graduating in 1949 and for over thirty years she worked in several hospitals, including Children's Hospital, Boston, Georgetown Hospital, Washington, D.C. and Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia as a Psychiatric Social Worker.
She retired in 1974 and moved to Danvers with her husband when he was appointed Medical Director at C.V. Hogan Regional Center.
She was popular with her neighbors and active in the community. She especially enjoyed her swimming group at the Danvers YMCA where she swam three days a week well into her 90's.
She is survived by her cousins Bruce and Nancy Linnehan and several nieces and nephews.
She will be remembered as an intelligent woman with a kind and gentle manner who cared deeply about the well-being of others. In recent years she moved from her lovely home in Hathorne to Putnam Farm.
She was loved by her care givers and the family thank them for their kindness.
Her graveside committal will be held 12:00pm Monday May 20 at Union Cemetery, Franklin.
