As sparks flew at the Town Council meeting Wednesday night, a potent storm burst over Franklin, provoking tornado warnings in nearby communities, and bringing wind gusts and heavy bursts of rain.
It was those conditions, according to DPW director, that spawned an early morning power outage, bringing DPW crew out to post stop signs at busy intersections where traffic signals were out of commission.
The outage began at about 6.39 am according to National Grid.
Michael Dalo, a spokesperson for the utility said the specific challenges that led to the Franklin outage included damaged utility poles that eventually caused outages to nearly 1720 customers. Initially the company side power might not be restored until 5 pm but, in fact, nearly all customers had been restored by mid day, with only five remaining without power.
Outages included the Historical Museum and Franklin Public Library.
In a post on X, Franklin Fire identified the pole location as Union Street.
