James L. Pontifex, Jr., 75, of Cotuit, died unexpectedly on July 15, 2024, doing what he loved: swimming at Loop Beach. He was the beloved husband of Ann M. (Shrewsbury) Pontifex, to whom he was married for 38 years.

James was born to James and Muriel (Mack) Pontifex and grew up in Medford. After graduating from Salem State, he worked for the IRS before moving on to work in private business as a CPA. Eventually, he returned to the IRS. He resided in Franklin for 20 years before moving to Cotuit, where he spent the last 19 years of his life.

James was an avid football fan and a New England Patriots season ticket holder. He also enjoyed swimming at the beach and candlepin bowling. Above all, he cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Leslie Carr, Jamie Viscione (Robert), and Ryan Pontifex (Nicole); his grandchildren, Billy, Dylan, Christopher, Daniel, Nicole, and Jayson; his brother, Robert Pontifex; and his niece, Jennifer Rudolph.
