James William Mitchell went home to be with the Lord on November 7, 2024. James was born in Boston on September 9, 1933. He was a star athlete, excelling in basketball and baseball where he tried out for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He joined the US Army after high school, serving at the time of the Korean War, where he was known as an amazing rappeler and sharpshooter, attaining the rank of Corporal. James married Marguerite Theodoss, his high school sweetheart and love of his life, during his Army service, beginning their 71 years of marriage. After James’s honorable discharge, the Mitchell family settled in Readville, MA.

James was Superintendent of Printing for the Christian Science Publishing Society in Boston for 34 years until he retired in 1990. He restored his first home on Colchester St. in Readville for his wife and his three little girls. His family were an integral part of the Blue Hill Community Church where he made by hand the wooden gold cross that hangs in the sanctuary. He was a caretaker, a Sunday school teacher and the emcee and main entertainer at the family church suppers. The Mitchell family moved to Franklin in 1978. James loved to putter around the house fixing things and was always available to help his family, friends and neighbors. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior on July 28, 2019. Even years later when asked “What makes you feel safe?" he answered “Being with the Lord.”

James leaves behind his loving family - his wife Marguerite, his daughters Kim Ausmus and her husband Daniel of Oxford, MA, and Jane Mitchell Huston and her husband Stephen of Franklin.

Private, Christian burial service with military honors is under the direction of the Charles F. Oteri and Son, Franklin Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in James’s memory to the American Heart Association.
