Dorothy (Shurin) Mikush of Mansfield, MA, formerly of Franklin, MA; Tunkhannock, PA; and Hillsborough, NJ passed away January 2, 2025, at the age of 88.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Mary (Watrol) Shurin, her spouse of 56 years John J. Mikush (Jack); and dear sisters Helen, Alice, Marge, Veronica, and her brother Joe.
Born in 1936 in Manville, NJ, Dorothy attended Manville Elementary School and Bound Brook High School where she enjoyed singing and dancing. She was an excellent student and graduated in 1954. She continued her education by attending secretarial school and began working at Johns Manville.
Dorothy met her husband, Jack, at a company Halloween party and they soon became engaged. They were married in 1958. Dottie and Jack raised their three children Michael, Lisa and Karen in Hillsborough, NJ. Upon their retirement, Jack and Dorothy moved to their dream home in Tunkhannock, PA and traveled the world with both old and new friends. She enjoyed sharing stories of her travels to Europe, China and many other adventures.
Dorothy was a homemaker, secretary, realtor, caregiver and most importantly a mother and grandmother. She had many talents including interior design and her home reflected her style and many travels. She was an artist, an avid gardener and was known as a fashionista with her stylish clothes, her signature scarves and her hair that never went gray.
Known for her positivity and sage advice, Dorothy was the matriarch and greatest cheerleader for her three children and seven grandchildren.
Dorothy leaves behind cherished memories with her children: Michael Mikush (Diane) of Bridgewater, MA, Lisa Piana (Robert) of Franklin, MA, and Karen Luft of Ashburn, VA and grandchildren: Elisabeth Mikush Rubio (Antonio), Julie Mikush, Melissa Piana, Cameron Piana, Jack Luft (Noelle Smith), Haley Luft and Jamie Luft.
She bravely faced the challenges of Parkinson’s Syndrome and was a role model of grace and strength to all she encountered. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at the Village at Willow Crossings in Mansfield, MA for their kindness while caring for her and enriching her life for the past two years.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend visiting hours at Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. on Saturday, January 18, 2025 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm followed by a funeral service at noon. A private burial service is planned in Pennsylvania at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
