Former Medway High Athlete Killed in Bellingham Crash
On Feb 12, Bellingham resident, Craig “Dog” Spencer, died at the age of 57. He was a well known athlete who captained his high school football, basketball and baseball teams at Medway High.
According to a Bellingham Police press release, on Tuesday, Feb 11, at approximately 9:42 pm, officer Nicholas J. Dulchinos came upon a motor vehicle crash near 40 North Main St. in Bellingham. The initial investigation indicates that the victim, later identified as Spencer, was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross North Main. Officer Dulchinos immediately began life saving measures, assisted shortly after by additional officers and Bellingham Fire Department paramedics. Spencer was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital before being airlifted to a trauma center. Spencer was later pronounced dead at the hospital
The operator of the vehicle was a 21-year-old female from Bellingham. The crash is being investigated by the Central Mass Law Enforcement Council (CEMLEC) Crash Reconstruction Team and the Bellingham Police. Based on the initial investigation the victim attempted to cross the road and stepped into oncoming traffic. There is no indication that the operator was under the influence and it is not believed that speed was excessive. The case remains underinvestigation.
According to a published obituary, Craig loved to cook, often bringing home-cooked goodies to friends, neighbors and coworkers. Fishing, especially in Narraganset Bay, had become a new passion as well.
He is survived by his parents Janice Spencer -Travers of Kittery, ME (previously of Bellingham, MA); Michael Spencer of Sarasota, FL; sisters JoAnn (& Chip) Decato of York, ME; Kathleen O’Leary of Natick, MA and was pre-deceased by his step-father Philip Travers. Craig's life will be honored in a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Wounded Warriors at woundedwarriorproject.org, an organization that was close to Craig’s heart.
