Ouch! Conservative-Leaning Group Sees Potential Big Tax Impact
The Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance joined a group of organizations urging the New England Congressional delegation to ensure that the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) not be allowed to lapse, potentially hiking taxes on families across the region. The organizations which spoke at today’s virtual press conference were Americans for Prosperity, Americans for Tax Reform, Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Policy, Maine Policy Institute, Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance, Rhode Island Center for Freedom and Prosperity, and the Yankee Institute. According to research by Americans for Prosperity (AFP), the TCJA’s expiration would cause the average Massachusetts family’s federal tax bill to increase by $4,656. Income tax rate hikes will account for $2,108 of the increase. AFP predicts that businesses will be negatively impacted and the economy will slow. If some of the provisions of the bill expire, Massachusetts is estimated to lose around 28,887 jobs. Overall, if the tax cuts are not renewed and it results in tax hikes, the average Massachusetts business will see its taxes increase by $2,031.

New Hampshire’s ski slopes and lakes are among its iconic natural attractions. But a NH House Bill 167, would ban ski waxes containing intentionally added PFAS from sale in the state. The measure would also impact similar products used in watersports. And in Maine, an alignment reached a few years ago to speed extraction of large lithium deposits in the state is now the subject of renewed debate as the Trump administration pushes to speed up mineral extractions...At the moment, no one is happy or in agreement about the substance that powers the green economy.
Franklin Commuter Rail Delayed
Even as the Governor was celebrating the launch of new South Coast Rail, an explosion and fire on Amtrak overhead wires at the River Street Bridge in Hyde Park, force delays on Franklin line trains and others Monday afternoon.
