The Town of Chatham has launched its 2025 Municipal Academy. The nine-session program is designed to provide residents with a deeper understanding of how local government operates. The academy will run on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. starting on September 3rd.
More than two dozen Massachusetts beaches were off limits to swimming heading into a sun-splashed summer weekend — a decrease of 14 from earlier in the week as drier weather mitigated the storm runoff that typically leads to the closures, but still a big damper on summer fun. Most of the 25 beaches were closed because of high bacteria levels caused by the storm runoff and other means of fecal contamination. Water quality at public beaches in Massachusetts is required to be monitored by local public health departments.
A new Pioneer Institute brief reveals that MBTA operating costs have surged dramatically since the elimination of the Fiscal and Management Control Board in 2021, with bus operations costs nearly doubling, overtime expenses rising 48%, and retirement obligations ballooning to $207.7 million annually. The analysis found that these escalating costs contributed to a projected $700 million deficit for FY25, prompting Governor Healey to approve an additional $535 million in emergency funding for the struggling transit agency.
