Verna A. Sherman, 73, of Franklin, passed away Tuesday May 5, 2026 at Milford Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family.
Born on July 9, 1952, to John and Mary Penque, Verna lived most of her life in Franklin. If you have spent any time in Franklin at all, you probably knew Verna in some way. Whether you met her during the many years she spent as a bartender at various Franklin spots, such as Barringer’s, or later in life during her time working at Dean College, you quickly found out that Verna was a person you would want to be around. She was funny, generous, kind, and selfless. She never hesitated to help and support those around her, and these qualities earned her a tremendous number of lifelong friendships.
Verna had an awesome sense of humor and a quick wit that drew people to her. She loved to give everyone nicknames - usually something hilarious and unique to them. She also had one herself; her grandkids called her “Mammow”.
Verna enjoyed spending time with her children and loved ones, chatting on the phone, playing cards, doodling, visiting with her grand-dogs Goose, Tatum and Tuukka, and watching her favorite shows and events on television; such as reality TV, wrestling, Friends, and Boston sports games.
Verna was someone to cherish and admire. Although there is comfort in knowing she is now reunited with Jesus Christ, her absence here on Earth will be deeply felt in the lives of those who were lucky enough to know her.
Verna is survived by her three children, Jennifer Young, Jayde Cardinale, and David Sherman; her grandchildren, Bruce Young III, Brandon Young, Bryan Young and Michael Cardinale; her great grandchildren, Bryson, Hudson, Lincoln, and Enzo; her brother, Ernest Penque; and her sister, Lori Penque.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary (Palladini) Penque, as well as her brothers, John Penque Jr. and Steve Penque.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home at 33 Cottage Street on Wednesday, May 13, from 4:00 to 7:00PM.
A funeral ceremony will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery at 176 Beaver Street in Franklin on Thursday, May 14, at 11:30 a.m
