John Ming Teng, 91, of Franklin, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, June 7, 2026, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on February 6, 1935, in Zaozhuang, China, John immigrated to the United States as a young man in search of opportunity and a better life. He first made his home in New York City and later San Francisco before settling in Massachusetts. He resided in the Brighton section of Boston and in Needham, where he raised his family, before moving to Franklin fifteen years ago.
A talented entrepreneur with a passion for cooking and sharing meals with others, John owned and operated several Chinese Food restaurants throughout the Greater Boston area. He established his first restaurant, Yen King, on Moody Street in Waltham, later expanding his career with restaurants in Brookline and Stoughton. Through his hard work, dedication, and love of hospitality, he built lasting relationships with customers and friends alike.
John was deeply committed to helping others. He worked and volunteered with Americares, assisting in the shipment of much-needed humanitarian supplies to his homeland. He was also actively involved in civic life as a member of the Asian Pacific Caucus of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, where he proudly supported causes important to the Asian American community.
In his spare time, John enjoyed watching YouTube videos, playing the lottery, and spending treasured moments with his grandchildren. He also devoted time to compiling and creating his own cookbook, reflecting his lifelong love of food, family, and culture.
John was predeceased by his first wife, Ruby (Wang) Teng, and his dear sister, Jiang Mei.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of twenty years, Yan Li (Wang) Teng; his loving and devoted daughters, Phyllis Higgins and her husband, Jeffrey, of Franklin, and Paulina Teng and her husband, Sean, of Franklin; his cherished grandchildren, Ruby, Ella, Ryan, Rory, and Aden; his dear sister, Jing Rong; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Family and friends are warmly invited to gather and celebrate John's life at the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Avenue, Needham, on Thursday morning, June 11, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed by the sharing of remembrances at 11:00 a.m. Guests are encouraged to wear something red, John's favorite color, in honor of his vibrant spirit and love of life.
Burial will follow at Needham Cemetery.
