According to reports published by WJAR, NECN, and the Sun Chronicle newspaper, Kevin Batiz of Franklin, 18, was involved in a serious crash in which the vehicle in which he was traveling became wedged under an Ocean State Job Lot tractor trailer.
After the crash, which happened late Wednesday evening and kept police on scene until 4 am Thursday, the Batiz vehicle burst into flame and passersby successfully put the flames out with an extinguisher and the help of the driver of a cement truck who reportedly emptied his vehicle's on-board water tank in an effort to help.
The collision reportedly occurred at Roger Williams Way and Commerce Park Road near the Quonset Point Industrial Park, where an Ocean State Job Lot warehouse is located.
Batiz was eventually extricated by local first responders and transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. Police stated that drag racing may have been involved and said another car had been seen in the vicinity just before the crash.
