Chief of Gastroenterology Albert A. Crimaldi, MD, PhD, has been named president of Milford Regional Medical Center’s medical staff. In this leadership role, Crimaldi serves as the principal elected official of the medical staff.

“I feel honored to once again lead my physician colleagues who have entrusted me with this great responsibility,” said Crimaldi, who previously twice served in this role during his 35-year tenure at Milford Regional. “I also welcome the opportunity to work with hospital leadership to advocate on behalf of our clinicians and patients.”

He joined the staff of Milford Regional Medical Center in 1987. In addition to two other terms as Medical Staff President from 1991 to 1994 and 2005 to 2009, Crimaldi also served as chairman of Milford Regional’s Department of Medicine and is the current division chief of gastroenterology. Additionally, he served as site coordinator for the University of Massachusetts Internal Medicine Residency program and has twice been voted Teacher of the Year by the UMass Internal Medicine residents at Milford Regional Medical Center. He is a former chairman of Milford Regional’s Board of Trustees and served for 19 years as a trustee, contributing his expertise through a variety of board committees.

“Dr. Crimaldi has served in almost every key leadership post as a physician and board member, and we are thrilled to have him return to serve as president of the medical staff once again,” said Edward J. Kelly, president and CEO of Milford Regional Medical Center. “We are pleased as an administration to be working closely with him in this capacity.”

Crimaldi is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, earning both an MD and PhD and was both a pre-doctoral and post-doctoral National Institutes of Health fellow. He completed his medical residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, serving an additional year as chief medical resident and received his GI fellowship training at Harvard University/Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology.

He has lectured at the National Institute of Health, National Cancer Institute and Temple University School of Medicine. He is also a member of several professional societies including the Massachusetts Gastroenterology Association, American College of Physicians and Massachusetts Medical Society.

“Throughout his extraordinary career at Milford Regional, Dr. Crimaldi has proven to care teams and patients to be a trusted and compassionate clinical leader,” said Milford Regional Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Peter Smulowitz, MD, MPH. “He’s a highly-regarded practitioner and leader and will thrive once again as president of our medical staff.”

Crimaldi succeeds Jeanne McCoy, MD, who served as president of the medical staff for four years. In addition to Crimaldi as president and McCoy as immediate past president, the other medical staff officers include Vice President Theresa Arpin, MD, and Secretary/Treasurer Matthew McCauley, DO.
