Leo Francis McCarthy, Jr., age 88, of Franklin, formerly of Glen Head, NY, Sandwich, MA, and Cape Coral, FL, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2024. Leo was born in Lowell, MA to Leo and Alice McCarthy. He spent his summers at Hampton Beach where he met his wife of 62 years, and love of his life, Marilyn.
Leo graduated from Boston College in 1958. After briefly serving in the military, he and Marilyn were married in 1962 at St. Augustine Church in Andover. Leo and Marilyn moved to Long Island, NY shortly after marrying. They raised their four children in Glen Head, NY. Leo worked in the Manhasset, NY public school system as an administrator and guidance counselor for thirty-two years before retiring. After retiring the McCarthy’s returned to Massachusetts, purchasing a home on Cape Cod. Always the educator and student advocate, Leo continued to work as regional representative for Marist College, Siena College, and Saint Leo University. He also spent his Cape summers as a starter at Sandwich Hollows Golf Club. Leo and Marilyn spent their winters in Cape Coral, FL, where they made many friends and enjoyed having their family come down to visit. On Long Island and both Capes Leo enjoyed boating, the sun and the water.
Leo was the devoted father of Ellen McCarthy Guerin and Robert of Sandwich, Michael and Christi McCarthy of Crofton, MD, Daniel and Amanda McCarthy of Norfolk, and Kevin and Christine McCarthy of Franklin. Loving grandfather of Connor, Griffin, and Casey Rose Guerin and Devin, Jack, Colin, Brian, Sean, Drew and Ian McCarthy, and loving brother of the late John McCarthy, faithful cousin and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Leo was gifted with the ability to see the best in everyone. He had an infectious personality that would light up a room and brighten everyone’s day. Leo will be remembered as an incredibly devoted husband, father, grandfather, cousin and uncle as well as a kind person and friend to all. Everyone who knew him would agree that his was a life well lived.
Visitation hours will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 MA-6A, Sandwich, MA on Sunday, January 5th from 3pm-6pm. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Parish in East Sandwich on Monday, January 6th at 11am, immediately followed by a burial at Sandwich Town Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
