Superintendent Armand Pires, Principal John Murray and Athletic Director Jeff Parcells have announced that Medway High School (MHS) held the second annual "Kick Out Cancer" soccer game series to raise funds for cancer support on Tuesday, Oct. 15 and Thursday, Oct. 17.

The annual event was initiated by MHS student-athlete Kevin McMahon in 2023. McMahon, now a senior, was inspired to raise awareness following the death of his grandmother, who had lung cancer, in 2020. McMahon’s aunt Marianne had also been diagnosed with cancer, but fortunately is on the road to recovery.

The MHS varsity and JV soccer teams purchased t-shirts designed by McMahon to wear during a series of games to support cancer research through The Jimmy Fund. Spectators and family members showed their support by also purchasing the shirts.

Over the past two years, McMahon has sold more than 300 t-shirts and has raised more than $20,000. This year, the Medway Soccer Teams raised $16,000.

“For Kevin, it’s not just about the fundraising, but also bringing together the community of Medway to help raise these generous donations,” said Principal Murray. “I'm inspired by his passion for fundraising and supporting a cause that has impacted so many families."

Since McMahon is a senior at MHS, he won't be able to organize next year’s fundraiser. However, his sister Kaitlyn, who is currently a freshman on the MHS Junior Varsity Girls soccer team, will step in to continue his legacy of cancer fundraising support.

On Oct. 15, the first match day, two home games were played. The MHS Girls Varsity soccer team, coached by Ryan Elster, played against Medfield High School. The MHS Girls Junior Varsity team, coached by Morgan Benoit, played against Medfield High School.

On Oct. 17, the second and final match day, two home games were played. The MHS Boys Varsity soccer team, coached by Chris Borden, played against the Boys Varsity team of Dover-Sherborn. The MHS Boys Junior Varsity team, coached by Jason Weintraub, played against Dover-Sherborn.

“We are so proud of Kevin,” said Superintendent Pires. “He truly represents what it means to bring a community together to inspire positivity and raise awareness, and it is amazing to see his idea flourish. His hard work and dedication to this cause is going to touch lives far beyond the community of Medway.”
