Housweetitis: STEM Project Builds "Gingerbread" Homes

Image

The fifth graders at Franklin's Lincoln Street School recently took part in a STEM project involving building "gingerbread" houses, using lots of the convenient, standard-size graham crackers.  The students took two days to plan, build, revise and decorate their projects...and a few treats were tasted along the way, according to educator Jennifer Murphy.

Graham crackers. according to Wikipedia, were inspired by the preaching of Sylvester Graham, who was part of the 19th-century temperance movement. He believed that a vegetarian diet anchored by bread made from wheat coarsely ground at home, was how God intended people to live.

s'mores came along much later...
