Thomas Joseph Egan, 76, of Medway, a proud U.S. Navy veteran, dedicated police sergeant, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 9, surrounded by the love of his family at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Roxbury.
Born in Beverly on January 19, 1950, he was the son of the late John F. and Jean F. (Shea) Egan. Tom was raised in Beverly and had lived in Medway for the past 29 years.
Tom served his country honorably in the United States Navy from February 27, 1969, to December 19, 1972, as a proud Vietnam War veteran, carrying that same sense of duty, strength, and integrity throughout his life. Following his military service, he devoted 27 years to the Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department, where he served with distinction and retired with the rank of Sergeant. He was widely respected for his steady leadership, commitment to the community, and the quiet compassion he showed those he protected. His career reflected the values he lived by every day — loyalty, service, and the protection of others.
Above all else, Tom was a family man. He shared nearly 20 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Linda J. (Whipple) Egan, whose partnership, love, and friendship meant everything to him. Together, they built a life centered on family, laughter, and making lasting memories.
He was a loving father and stepfather to Lindsey Egan and her husband, Casey, of Magnolia; Alison Trimby and her husband, Paul, of Essex; Kaitlyn Brooks and her husband, Evan, of Menifee, California; and Matthew Trinks and his partner, Brianne, of Blackstone. He took great pride in each of them. Nothing brought him more joy than time spent with his cherished granddaughter, Charlotte, who held a very special place in his heart.
Tom is also survived by his siblings, Dennis Egan and his wife, Janet, of Dennis; Joseph Egan and his wife, Marie, of Beverly; Christopher Egan and his wife, Carrie, of Hampton, New Hampshire; and Jean Belanger and her husband, Kevin, of Danvers. He was predeceased by his brother, John Egan of Laconia, New Hampshire. He also leaves many loving nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
Tom found happiness in life’s simple pleasures — long days at the beach, the sound of the ocean, and traveling to Bermuda, a place he loved to visit and unwind. Rarely seen without one of his bright tropical shirts and well-worn flip-flops, he always seemed dressed for vacation and ready to head to the shore at a moment’s notice. He loved to “spin” the beach to see what was going on, a casual lap that usually turned into a few conversations and plenty of laughs. He carried the relaxed spirit of the islands wherever he went. He will be remembered for his quiet humor, steady guidance, kind heart, and for the comfort and laughter that came simply from being together.
Tom was an active member of American Legion Post 113 in Manchester-by-the-Sea, where he proudly served his fellow veterans and the community, including a term as Commander.
His strength, dignity, and dedication to both family and community will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Sunday, March 1, at the Ginley Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber Street, Medway, from 2–4 p.m., with a service at 4:00 p.m.
Burial will be held at a later date at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the VA Medical Center, 1400 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA 02132.
