Contractor Fined for Asbestos Violations in Medway

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has fined Newton-based G.T. Home Service Inc., a licensed home improvement contractor, $12,974 for multiple asbestos-related violations that occurred during the interior renovation of a residence in Medway.

MassDEP received a non-traditional work plan from G.T. Home Service. Following the inspection of the Medway residence, MassDEP discovered renovation activities had occurred without an asbestos survey. An asbestos survey is required before renovation or demolition work to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. Further investigation by MassDEP revealed that, in addition to failing to notify the Department of any asbestos at least 10 days prior to the start of abatement, the company did not follow the required work practices to remove, package, and store an asbestos-containing joint compound.

“Contractors doing renovation work must follow the requirements to identify asbestos-containing materials and ensure that those materials are safely removed before beginning any work,” said Andrea Briggs, acting director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester. “Asbestos is a known carcinogen, so adhering to the requirements is imperative to protect workers, residents, and the public from exposure. Failure to follow the requirements will result in significant penalties.” 

Under the terms of MassDEP’s order, G.T. Home Service has agreed to pay the $12,974 penalty and to immediately comply with all asbestos regulations for all demolitions and renovations it conducts in Massachusetts going forward.
