Franklin Library ESOL Program Ranked as "Exemplary"

 The Franklin Public Library has been informed by the  Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) has marked their English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program in its Grants to States Program Report to the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

According to MBLC, the reasons for marking this project exemplary were two-fold. First, the project developed an excellent model for a sustainable English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program through its inclusion of ongoing training, support, and resources for tutors in addition to services and resources for students. Second, the overall impact of the project was significant. Both in terms of the tremendous reduction in waitlisted students as well as the reported impacts from both the students and tutors on how meaningful the program was to them.

Franklin Public Library offers free, one-on-one English language tutoring for those new to the English language, as well as for English speakers who would like to improve their basic reading and writing skills. It also engages and trains those interested in providing English language instruction.

Those looking for conversation practice (instead of or in addition to one-on-one tutoring), can join an English Conversation Group on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 - 7:30pm in the Horace Mann Reading Room.
