The Definition of Irony

At the same moment that the body she leads is putting forward legislation to block voter-approved legislative audits and to keep Massachusetts as the least transparent state government in the United State, to the frustration of the state's journalists, Senate President Karen Spilka and Senator Rausch are pushing legislation to protect journalists. “A free press is absolutely essential to a healthy and thriving democracy,”  Spilka (D-Ashland) wrote in a press release. “Defending our residents from the Trump Administration means we must protect their right to access reporting that holds institutions accountable and promotes the public good. It also means we must protect journalists and news organizations—as well as their sources. I applaud Senator Rausch for her leadership on this important amendment to our public records bill, Majority Leader Creem for shepherding the underlying legislation, and each of my Senate colleagues for their support.”

Norfolk Child Porn Conviction

A Norfolk man pleaded guilty last week  in federal court in Boston to sexually exploiting a two-year-old minor victim from Massachusetts.  Ethan Irving, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of children. U.S. District Court Judge Julia E. Kobick scheduled sentencing for Oct. 27, 2026. Irving was arrested and charged in January 2026.  In June 2025, Irving was identified as an online user who uploaded three files of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) to Kik Messenger. A July 2025 forensic analysis of two cell phones sized from Irving’s residence located multiple media files depicting CSAM. As a result of the findings, Irving was arrested and charged in Wrentham District Court in July 2025. He subsequently pleaded guilty to Dissemination of Obscene Matter and Possession of Child Pornography on Dec. 3, 2025, for which he was sentenced to two years of probation with conditions that prohibit his contact with children.
