Michael Urban Schmidt, 74, of Franklin, died January 28 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester following a brief illness. He was the husband of Stefanija (Ficker) Schmidt for the past 55 years.

Born in Sidney, Ohio, on February 19, 1951, he was the son of the late Valerian and Mary (Luma) Schmidt. Michael was raised in Ohio and had lived in Illinois, Georgia, and Delaware before moving to Franklin 20 years ago.

Michael was a hard worker and, through the experience he gained, became president and co-owner of a successful manufacturing company.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed cars and loved traveling to different automobile museums with friends, as well as participating in "cruise nights" with a vintage car he owned.

Michael was known for his loving and generous spirit. He was a devoted father and always extended kindness to those around him. Many people have shared stories of the help and encouragement he quietly provided throughout his life.

For most of his adult life, Michael was one of Jehovah's Witnesses and was an active member of the Franklin congregation for many years. As part of his faith, he found joy in sharing its message of hope with others through his ministry.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Brent Schmidt of Franklin and Amanda Schmidt of Franklin, along with his daughter-in-law, Suzanna Schmidt.

He is also survived by his siblings David Schmidt, Steve Schmidt, and Andy Schmidt of Ohio, and was the brother of the late Jerry Schmidt and Joyce Meadows.

Michael is also survived by his grandchildren, Elanor and Miriam.

Donations may be made in his memory to the worldwide work of Jehovah's Witnesses at donate.jw.org.

Arrangements are under the care of the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin (ginleyfuneralhomes.com).
