`Roots and Branches' Soccer Program Digs into Region's Soccer History
On Sunday, a panel at the Franklin Historical Museum delved into the deep sports history of the region, in particular the founding story for 'foot ball' sports in North America, the Oneidas Club that began playing "The Boston Game" in 1863. Panelists Dr. Kevin Tallec Marston, based on Switzerland, Kristine Moore (Plainville Historical Museum), and Rich Frongillo, Franklin Youth Soccer coach explored how working class immigrant athletes built soccer into a regional phenomenon in the late 19th and early 20th century while football, mostly at colleges, tended to appeal to a different audience. Restrictions on immigration and other factors saw American Football grow dramatically in popularity, but since the 1970s, soccer in all forms has grown in leaps and bounds, in many cases rekindling some of its older participants.
