Space Mirror Coming to a Night Sky Near You?

Under a bill
passed by the Mass. Senate, this month, known as the ‘Dark Skies Bill,’ S.3145,
An Act to improve outdoor lighting, conserve energy, and increase
dark-sky visibility—legislators spotlighted on outdoor illumination owned by local or state
government, such as streetlamps, as a means for increasing municipal
affordability and supporting the environment. The legislation also takes aim at light pollution, which occurs when
outdoor light fixtures unnecessarily shine up into the sky. However, it may not matter....For years, astronomers
have watched satellites multiply until deep-sky photos without
streaks became almost impossible. Now the FCC has approved something
potentially even worse, according to a report from Spaceweather.com, a giant orbiting mirror that will beam a
full-Moon-bright spotlight down onto the Earth. If the first launch
succeeds, thousands more could follow. The applicant is a California startup called Reflect Orbital.

If it Looks Like a Duck and Quacks Like a Duck?

Two losing bidders sued the state and the winning developer last week seeking to halt the state's planned 40-year lease for the $2 billion Springfield Regional Justice Center until a judge reviews claims that the procurement violated state law and the project's request for proposal. The Trial Court, working with the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, provisionally selected a development team that includes politically-connected Massachusetts Convention Center Authority Interim Executive Director John Barros and the husband of U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (often described in the media as "a convicted felon") for the project expected to open in 2030. Apparently no one remembers the Ward Commission or the Boston Common Underground Garage Scandal...
