Medway Seeks Public Input on Creation of Historic District

The Medway Historical Commission is inviting the public, especially homeowners in the Rabbit Hill part of town, to join the Historical Commission on Sept. 24, 6:00 p.m., at the Medway Public Library (Cole Room), 26 High Street, to discuss creating a local historic district.

The Commission had reached out via postal mail to owners in the area but got limited response and decided that a public informational meeting would be a prudent next step in the process.

Massachusetts allows local communities to set up their own historical districts and devise rules that are appropriate and acceptable to the community and that can help preserve the historic character of an area.

According to Wikipedia, the Rabbit Hill Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, It is a historic district roughly bounded by Highland, Main, Franklin, and Milford Streets in Medway, Massachusetts. The designation is an honorific but does not provide for preservation.  It encompasses about 40 acres  and much of a 19th-century village that developed around the Second Congregation Church (now the West Medway Community Church), and industrial facilities that developed along the Charles River just outside the district. Most of the residential properties in the district are Federal or Greek Revival in character.
