Can it Happen Here?

We asked public safety and school officials whether something like the Pawtucket mass shooting could happen 'here.'  We heard back from Franklin Superintendent, Lucas Giguere, who noted, "In general, we work closely with the Franklin Police Department and other public safety partners to plan for and support school-based and large-scale events. Protocols are in place for prevention, coordination, emergency response, and post-incident support, and those plans are regularly reviewed and practiced."  He also referenced the School Safety webpage: https://www.franklinps.net/page/school-safety, which outlines the `information we are able to share publicly with our community.'

"As you can imagine, we are careful to balance transparency with the need to protect the integrity of our safety plans and procedures. Sharing too much operational detail can unintentionally compromise the very measures designed to keep students, staff, and community members safe."

A Salt on Nature

The Boston Globe recently reported on the problem of melting snowbanks. The remainin road salt poses threat to New England’s freshwater ecosystems. Indeed they noted, "of all the winter pollutants, road salt is the most concerning because it is particularly harmful to freshwater organisms that haven’t evolved to tolerate salt water."
