Stetson, Maine - Deborah Lee McCarthy (Desper), lovingly known as "Debbie," age 73, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 1, 2026. Debbie was born on July 24, 1952, in Milford, Massachusetts, one of 19 children born to Charles and Eva Desper.
Growing up in a large family shaped her generous heart and deep love for family that would define her life. On January 29, 1972, Debbie married the love of her life, Brian John McCarthy. Together they shared 54 years of marriage, raising their children in Maine before eventually settling in Stetson, Maine, where they founded a church and faithfully served their community. While in high school, Debbie worked as a CNA, and later in life she worked as a teacher's aide. After their children were grown, Debbie and Brian followed a calling to the mission field, serving for ten years in Mississippi with Rock of Ages Prison Ministry. Debbie spoke often and fondly of her time ministering to women in prison, a mission that was especially close to her heart. After completing their missionary work, Debbie and Brian returned home to Stetson and resumed leadership of the church they had founded. Back home, Debbie found joy in simple but meaningful things - cooking, sewing, volunteering with the town's Ladies Auxiliary, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Debbie loved trying new recipes and preparing meals for others. In her younger years, she even made her own clothes and lovingly sewed garments for many members of her family. Serving others came naturally to her, and her home was always open.
She was preceded in death by her parents; multiple siblings; and most recently, her beloved daughter, Heather Tibbetts. Debbie is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Brian John McCarthy; her son, Ronald and wife, Mollie; daughter, Stacy and husband, Chad; son-in-law, Tim; daughter, Christy and life partner, Tyler; son, Brian and wife, Alyssha; and many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
Debbie's life was marked by faith, service, devotion to family, and a heart for ministry. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and steadfast commitment to God and those she served.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 12 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 249 Village Road in Stetson, Maine. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate her life. Food and fellowship will follow the service.
